I am sanding my entire deck to remove some old Behr stain that I unfortunately used a few years back. I am planning on using the Gemini deck cleaner and brightener kit after the sanding. My plan is to use the TWP 1500 stain on a majority of the deck and use the Sikkens solid stain on the railing and perhaps the pergola. I need to replace some of the wood on the deck - mostly the railings and possibly some of the pergola. I am planning on buying pressure treated lumber from Home Depot most likely.

I have a few questions to make sure that I am doing this correctly so it turns out nice and will last:

- I understand that I have to wait 48 hours after applying the brightener so the deck will be ready to apply the stain. Is it best to do the cleaning/brightening in sections? Should I apply the cleaner and then lightly power wash off or should I just rinse off with a hose since I sanded everything already? I have a seating section, pergola and the main deck area and I want to make sure I don't wait too long between cleaning/brightening and staining. Is it best to stain as quickly as possibly after applying the brightener?

- Do I need to let the new wood age before applying the stain or can it be stained immediately? Should new wood be cleaned and brightened as well? I will be applying the Sikkens solid to a majority of the new wood but some TWP 1500 may be applied to some.

- I was talked into buying some Benjamin Moore arborcoat stain from an Epco Paint location that did not carry the Sikkens. It is a water based stain and they said I had to apply an oil based primer prior to using the stain to keep it from peeling. After thinking more about it, it seems like more work than want to do. Would you suggest using the Sikkens solid stain as opposed to the Benjamin Moore primer/stain combo?

- I am trying to determine if I should stain the pergola with the TWP or the Sikkens. I would prefer to probably use the Sikkens solid as that is the accent color but I want to make sure it will last as well as the TWP. I live in IL and there are cold, snowy winters here so the deck will be exposed to a lot of bad weather.

I appreciate your input as I have been referring to your website often throught this whole process.

Thanks for the help!

-Clean all at once, light pressure rinse, brighten all at once, then lightly rinse. Wait 48 hours after the prep and up to two weeks for staining.
-You are supposed to let new wood weather but that depends on the stain manufacturer and what they suggest.
-Yes Sikkens solid stain
-Do all verticals in the solid and just the floors in the TWP.
