Hey all,

In the process of buying my first home and while everything else is in great shape, the cedar siding and deck will need some TLC. Having lived in NYC apartments all my life, I haven't had the opportunity to learn much about wood treatment and care, but being a DIY-er with just about everything, figured I'd give this a shot.

There are quite a few black areas (mold presumably) on the siding and deck, so I plan to throughly clean it all, then apply a stain/sealer/protectant.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as the products?  For cleaning, i see oxygen  bleach mentioned regularly, though no particular brand. As far as protection, I read that parrafin based stains work well on cedar, though they don't offer much as far as mold/mildew protection. Should I be looking at something else?

Thanks in advance!

Look at the Restore A Deck Cleaner and Brightener Kits. For the stain, use Armstrong Clark Wood Stains.

I have a cedar deck and it hasn't been sealed for a couple years. I've kept it clean by power washing so at this point there is no seal remaining. I just finished power washing again to prepare for the seal and I'm wondering if I need to use a brightener? The wood is in good shape and after power washing it is very light colored already. Since I didn't use a cleaning agent or stripper, is it necessary to use a brightener to get the ph right or should it be fine already since I haven't used any other product on it?
