Brightening Screw Spots

I have removed Behr Acrylic solid stain on the deck I am restoring. I tried HD-80 and it only got some of the stain off. So I have spent the last few weeks sanding every evening to get every bit of paint off. I then brightened the wood to revive the color and get rid of any dark spots caused by the previous use of the HD-80. The deck looked amazing when it was freshly washed.

Now there are dark stains around every screw. When I was brigthening I was very meticulous to spray down each row of screws and even scrubbed some of them to get them looking great. But as soon as it was completely dry the next day all of the dark spots came back.

Please help, I dont want to seal in these awful stains. My wife said she doesn't really notice them but they stick out like no tomorrow for me.

Also the deck brightening seemed to turn my deck more yellow than when it was freshly sanded.

That is rust from bad screws and not much you can do. Maybe replace all of the screws with the proper ones. You will need to re brightener after to remove the rust spots.

About 50 of the 800 screws were replaced as they were raised or stripped. The dark spots show up around those screws as well.

Russell of Woodrich/Citralic Brightner recommended I apply the brightener at a higher concentration and do not rinse it off. Sure enough the next day the deck looked amazing. Every spot was gone.

However as soon as it rained the spots all came back and some of them even got larger than before. (This is all still prior to being stained)

I am doing a pergola with deck structure. The pergola had a few black spots and I applied this "leave it on to dry" method as well. I used Defy stain on the pergola and it looked great but seemed to turn into a paste as it smeared over the areas with dry brightener. It didn't penetrate like the other 95% of the pergola structure. Another forum mentioned that an oil based stain will go right though this dry brightener without turning into a smeary paste. I have Armstrong Clark ready to go for the floor.

I don't want to keep making the black spots darker or larger, and I don't want the stain to not absorb correctly, and if I can get them to disappear prior to staining I'd like them to not reappear 3-4 days later when it rains again.

This person has almost the exact same problem as me, multiply applications of brightner, looks great immediately after use, but seems to get worse. He also replaced all of his screws. Is heavy powerwashing to get both the rust and brightener out required? The fastest setting on my garden sprayer or heavy rains don't wash anything away but seem to make it worse as soon as it dries.

Nothing you can do as it will just turn black again after the rain.
