Hi, we are looking to refinish our redwood house and deck. The contractors we god bids from recommended Sikkens and the the other one superdeck.

The reviews/ratings posted here state for both products that stripping is needed before you can recoat.

Some other products seem to not require this, you just clean and recoat when it has worn off.

I would like to undertand why stripping is needed for some products. And what the tradeoffs are of choosing a product you don't need to strip.

Thanks,
eva

Eva, that is a good question. All deck stains will eventually fail. It is best to use a stain that fades in color and is a penetrating stain. These stains are easier for reapplying and or removing with a deck stain stripper if needed. We tend to favor these products. Products that darken in color or film on the surface are harder to maintain down the road.

I would like to add, read a can of Sikens. It is only good if you seal ALL 6 side of the wood. If not mosture can wook its way up under the sealer. You should seal it again before it starts to look like it neads more sealer. In others words if you let if go too long before it is harder to reseal and it look right. There are other sealers that if you go to ling between sealing it still seals up good.
