The redwood slats and rails on my decks need to be redone and I'm hoping for some advice.  They were last coated two years ago with a Cabot oil based semitransparent stain.  I live on the ocean so we get lots of salt, wind, sun and fog.  Stains seem to last between 2-4 years.

My first question is about stripping the slats.  I was going to use your recommendations for Restore A Deck-using a firm nylon brush to apply- but local ordinances prevent me from using a pressure washer to clean off the stripper.  Will the garden hose work despite the lower pressure?

Do you have any suggestions?

I do not think you will be able to strip this without the use of a pressure washer.

I was worried about that.  Guess I'll sand down what I can. Thanks for the quick response.

One last question.  If I used an oil based stain two years ago, do I have to strip off the old stain to reapply a new stain by a different company?  I used Cabot and plan on now using TWP 1500.  I know some areas won't look great but ....

Yes, you have to strip. It should be an easy strip. Make sure to use the brightener after.
