This is such a mess and a pain project! I wished we could just remove it all and rebuild, but...
So whatever previous homeowner put down was all coming up right after we bought the house. You can see it in the pics. My husband has been pressure washing and then sanding to remove it. The bottom left corner if the only part that has both completed. As you can tell, 95% of it is removed, mainly in the knots where there is still some.
So question is what can we cover this with? I see any of the products that are the thicker "paint/restore" stink and we will have the same issue not far down the road which we do not want. The best thing I have seen out of the Deckover, etc is the Gulf Synthetics, but it seems to have mixed reviews as well so I am very leery of that too.
However, will any true stains work since 100% of the old stuff isn't gone? We just want something to cover it and maybe give us 5 years until we can redo the entire thing. Any suggestions??
Thank you!!
And yes, I have been researching this site extensively and tons on google... so far not a good "restore" type product I have found that won't be coming off soon after like this one.
Just an FYI, nothing will last 5 years. 2-3 is the most you will get before some additional work is required. The Gulf does work and can easily be touched up as needed. Your other option is to use a solid color deck stain. That too will start to fail after a couple of years. We like the Flood Solid Stains.
Thank you for the reply. we are going to go with a stain this time as it looks like we are able to get 99% of it off. And yes, definitely aware it will need to be touched up, but much easier to touch this up versus the paint type that has to be removed and redone :-/
Thanks again!

We hired a professional to stain our IPE wood porches around our house. The house is 11 years new and the porches looked weathered here in the Charleston area. He did not prep the wood and applied an Olympic Elite Semi solid stain to the entire surface. 72 hours later the porches are sticky and there are many bubbled up areas. We need some advice as to the next steps to remove the stain that was applied and to apply a stain that will refresh the beautiful grains of the Ice wood. I have attached a before and after view of the wood porches.
The only way to remove this is to sand and that will not be easy as the stain was heavily over applied and was the wrong type for IPE. I believe the stain will "gum" up the sandpaper, creating lots of issues in the sanding process. Stripping will not remove this.
Sorry but this is not going to be easy to fix.
