Hi everyone,

I need a little advice with staining.  I’m a bit of a novice.

We’re re-staining our cedar deck this year (just the horizontal parts) because our old Sikkens Cetol Dek stain worked very poorly over the winter. It was covered in black lines and spots this spring. I hear they changed the formula a while back and it’s not as good anymore.  So, we prepared the deck as per instructions and have re-stained with Cutek Extreme which seems to work really nicely. Long story short, there’s part of it that we want to have the old Sikkens colour (inside the railings) but we’ve already put on one coat of the Cutek.

My question is, can I apply a coat of Sikkens Cetol Dek overtop of wood that’s already coated with one coat of Cutek Extreme?  And maybe get the penetrative protection of the cutek but with the colour of Sikkens?  The Sikkens is a surface barrier type finish instead of penetrative so it would sit on top…

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

No. You cannot apply a different brand of stain over the Cutek. It will probably peel.
