OK - so I'm looking for a stain for redwood siding, not a deck. The siding was stained 25 years ago with Cabot Semi-t dune gray. Needless to say, it's time for a new coating. The siding is cleaning up nicely and most of the color is coming off with scrubbing. I was going to re-stain with Cabot semi-t in a light blue, green, or gray. After reading your site I'm concerned about using Cabot again, yet none of your recommended brands offer a variety of color. Any suggestions? I really don't look forward to telling my wife she has a choice of tan or light brown.
The only way to get those colors is to have a custom mix and that means it will be a filming acrylic stain, not penetrating. Not such a big deal on siding but on a deck, it would peel. Also, it leans to be more opaque in color this way and not a true semi-trans. No brands that we like or use it will give a true semi-transparent appearance in these colors. You may have to use the Cabot again but not sure if it will look the same or the way you want due to formula changes.
Thanks for the info. I realize that siding is not the focus of this forum; too bad as your reviews are far and away the best online. Do you have recommendations for semi-t penetrating stain for siding? ...of course, those with a selection of colors.
Wood siding and deck stains are rated the same. They will last much better on vertical wood as well. See this about the best stains: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/the-5-best-deck-stain-reviews-and-ratings/
