I see a review here for Superdeck, but not for their 9600 solid color stain. We are in western Washington and have lots of trees and plenty of rain. We have older cedar fences, white cedar on one side and red cedar on two sides. Pressure washing has removed most of the old stain, except around knots on the red cedar. We are considering Superdeck 9600 solid stain, because the fences would match, because solid protects longer, and they have a 15 year warranty for fences with 2 coats and proper prep. I see that TWP and Defy don't seem to have solid color versions.
Is this a reasonable option, is the 15 year claim realistic? I'm assuming we would have to clean every year to prevent the green algae, and maybe recoat at some point, but as we are close to retirement, we don't want to go through all of the prep to completely remove and redo the stain every 2-3 years. The white cedar is older and that fence has a number of rotten boards that we will need to replace before staining, so it will be a mix of new and old wood. I suspect we will have to replace that fence within 10 years or less, but for now we are hoping that new stain will at least make it look good.
Does this seem like a good plan, what is your opinion of Superdeck 9600?
Nothing lasts 15 years. That is a gimmick warranty. On a vertical fence you will at best get 6-8 years. We are not fans of solid stains as they peel and look like paint. We like the penetrating semi-transparent stains that show the natural grain of the wood.
