There are a lot of new products on the market that claim that you can stain wet wood. While this sounds like it would help extend the season for staining, my concern is that the stains might be a compromise. Do you recommend any stains that can go over wet wood? Are there any compromises over optimal applications with premium stains?

1 - Seattle Washington
2 - Partial Shade
3 - Tight knot cedar
4 - Always mold and mildew in the Northwest
5 - Never enough drying time between rains

We have tried a few of the wet wood stains. Wood Tux, Biowash NDO, etc. Applying to damp wood did not seem to hinder the performance of these stains compared to applying the same to dry wood. We are testing some of the new stains (Cabot) that can do this but it is too early to tell.

In our opinion you should just apply to a dry deck. Less moisture in the wood means deeper penetration into the wood in general.
