My husband and I were just about to purchase Cabot Australian Timber Oil to stain our new Cedar Fence and Gates. We chose this product based on recommendation from the salesman at the local Home Depot. The fence, completely installed 29 Apr, is built with vertical cedar 4X6 planks using pressure treated wood supports and steel posts. The company that installed the fence recommended we wait at least 30 days before staining. We here in San Antonio, TX had an unusual amount of rain for most of May and thus decided to wait a little longer before staining. As I was searching for where to actually purchase the Timber Oil (turns out Home Depot doesn't actually sell it) my online searching led me to your site.
All that said, I'm confused more than ever about the best thing to do. What I have gathered from this point is that we should follow these steps:
1) Wait another 3 - 4 months because the cedar is still "new".
2) Clean the fence with a cleaner/brightener before staining.
3) Stain the fence, using a brush, with one coat only.
4) Wait 12 months.
5) Clean the fence with a cleaner/brighter..
6) Apply two coats of stain.
7) Maintenance with cleaning and staining apprx. every 12-18 months.
Does that sound right?

Is the rough sawn cut? If so you can avoid all the wait and prep and stain now as long as the wood is clean and dry.
Sorry again for my lack of knowledge, but how do I know if the wood is rough sawn?
Texture. Rough sawn looks rough and smooth wood is very smooth. Try googling "rough sawn cut" wood and look at the pictures.
