Paint or Stain?

I was all set to paint my deck here in No. California after pressure washing it this weekend, it had been stained before professionally. But now I am totally confused after reading reviews about painting, i.e. peeling problems. But I am not totally committed to the brightening/sanding process to stain my deck. Can I stain my deck without the extra prep and have okay results? Or is painting really that bad in an area that is in a drought and without extreme weather conditions? Any ideas on what to do? What paint and/or stain would you recommend Thanks. 😯 😎

Paint will peel eventually and it never shows the grain. Best to apply a penetrating stain. Hard to say if you need more prep or not. Feel free to post a picture if you would like.

Thanks. I can tell I would need more prep because it is uneven in color, though most of the old stain is worn away.

I just bought a new house the siding is grey with white trim, the deck needs a little work and I was wanting to paint it grey and the railings white to match the house. I don't care about not seeing the grain but I don't want the expense of putting up a new composite deck to get the color I want, is there any kind of deck restore type paint out there that is actually any good? I live in the mountains of Virginia and we have some severe weather here. Cold snowy winters, wet springs, and hot humid summers.
