Hello, I would appreciate some assistance on a few questions on staining a newly installed cedar deck railing. I live in the Seattle area; the railing was installed about 6 weeks ago; the weather has been pretty dry; the goal is to preserve the natural wood color.

1. From what I've read, I am thinking of using Anderson Clark transparent "natural" stain. Is this a good choice? Is there a better choice to achieve my desired end result?
2. Have I waited a sufficiently long enough time to apply this stain?
3. If I am able to stain the cedar now, do I need to go through the cleaning and brightening process using something like Restore-A-Deck? Can I just lightly pressure wash it before I stain?
4. After I do clean the cedar, how long should I wait for it to dry before I apply the stain?

Thank you very much. Your website is great.

1. Sure but you are choosing the lightest tint so it will fade the fastest. Lighter colors always fade quicker.
2. No, more like 10-12 weeks.
3. Use a deck cleaner and wood brightener while lightly pressure washing.
4. 2 days is normal

Thanks!

One follow up question: Does the Armstrong Clark stain fully dry-to-touch? The product is described as being wet and dry oil-based. Thank you.

Need some help.

I applied Armstrong Clark transparent cedar color stain on the cedar railings. We are not happy with the color. It's too reddish and gold. Can we apply a gray stain over it? Can we use a water base stain like Defy? Do we need to clean and brighten before we re-stain? Thanks.

You would need to strip and brighten first.
