Hello.  We recently had a Batu floor installed on our outdoor north facing porch.  It basically never gets sunlight but does get wet from rain.  The contractor used 3 coats of Varathane Ultimate Spar Urethane to coat it. The first coat sank completely into the wood.  I've since learned that this probably wasn't the best choice for the porch floor.  I'm reading that it'll peel up within a year and then I'll have to sand down to bare wood and apply an appropriate finish. Your thoughts on this?  If I do have to sand to bare wood, what's the best product to apply to the Batu floor.  I'd like to not change the colors of the wood so a clear finish is desired.

Thank you

Varnish never works on outside wood. It will fail.

You will need a stain for proper protection from the elements and those will enhance the grain of the wood. Use one of these hardwood stains.

Thank you. But remember I stated the porch receives no sunlight.  Will the poly still fail?  Anyway, when the current poly fails and I decide to sand and stain, how far down do I have to sand?  The first coat of Spar Urethane completely sunk into the wood.  Do I have to sand the actual top layer of wood off to remove the sunk in stuff?

Yes, it will still fail. You will have to remove 100% down to the bare wood.
