Hello,

I built my 32'x16' deck in May/June this year using PT wood from a lumber yard and not a big box store. I am located in Philadelphia PA, and wanted to get a coat on before the winter. I have pressure washed the deck, but the PT wood still has some "dark" stains in a few spots. For this reason and others, I was looking at an opaque stain. Any recommendations for use with an HVLP sprayer?

- I have looked at the TWP, but this is only a "semi" and the 100 series can not be shipped to my state. The 1500 series did not have the grayish color I was looking for.

- I have also looked at DEFY and Armstrong, but again these are semi-transparent and I am afraid the dark spots will show.

- As far as opaque, all I have seen is the Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Flood. These all have the grayish colors.

- As with most people, I am looking for mold resistant, longest time between reapplying, and generally looks good for covering up the dark spots.

- The deck is on the rear of the house and 90% of it gets sun for most of the day. There is a section closet to house that is under the soffits that does not get that much sun.

I am looking for suggestions and recommendations for stain with an HVLP sprayer, do I need additional surface prep, and if there are any reasons that I should not use opaque.

Thanks!

Solid stains have a tendency to peel as they dry on top of the surface. They also cannot be sprayed with  HVLP sprayer. You would need and airless.

Best are the semi-transparent penetrating stains. Easier to maintain. As for the spots, cleaning and brightening the wood should help.

Thank you very much for the reply. Is there a recommended cleaner and brighter that I can use on a brand new deck?

Thanks!
