I am in the middle of the project, of staining three porches and a deck at my house. I wanted to spray, but since I am using TWP oil-based stain, I was very cautious of using an airless. I actually bought a Graco airless LTS 15, but I never opened the box. I just knew it would be a disaster trying to clean. So I took it back.

I had never heard of an HVLP sprayer until then, but I bought one - a Wagner PaintReady System. Best toy I've used in quite a while! Years ago I played with airbrush art, and this thing reminds me of an airbrush. I was able to spray TWP right out of the can, and clean-up is a breeze. The stain only touches the components right in the spray gun itself.

I'm sure other brands would work as well. The important thing to me is that an HVLP is WAY better than an airless for oil-based stains. I almost made a very expensive mistake, just because I didn't know of an alternative. Now I do, and so do you.
