You have a varnish on there and it has to come off fully first by either power sanding:

Or a Paint Striper:

@administrator Thanks for the response, its appreciated.

I'll sand off the varnish.

Once I've done that, should I add the stain? If so, do you have any recs?

@administrator On seconds thoughts, I;'m going to use the stripper to remove the varnish from the Douglas fir.

- Do I need to use a brightener before applying the stain?

- Do I need to protect the surrounding walls with tarp during the stripper and brightening stage or is only required during the staining process?

TIA.

Yes, brighten after and protect all walls when stripping.

1. Middle Tennessee

2. partial shade

3. pressure treated pine

4. no existing mold, pressure washed recently

5. Behr Deckover is liquid garbage

hello! I have an old deck that needs to be stained. The rotten wood was replaced a month ago, with new PT pine. This deck is half old wood and half new wood. The good wood that was left on is quite weathered compared to the new wood. I am looking for a khaki-shade paint/stain that will fill small voids and cracks, and it should be solid so all the wood looks the same. I know Behr Deckover is awful, any suggestions on what to use? Should i stay away from latex? Can I mix permanent patch 101 with some kind of paint to make something similar to deckover?

Post pics of current condition and do you have Behr Deckover still on the older wood?

Can I mix permanent patch 101 with some kind of paint to make something similar to deckover? No, that is not possible.

State: Indiana

full sun until late afternoon

PT pine

minor mildew

previously used Cabot timber oil. Looking for something better in a semi transparent stain. The other factor is that the deck railing has powder coated aluminum spindles. I’ve seen a demo on one brand of oil based stain that said that drips could be wiped off spindles if done soon after applying stain. In other words, you wouldn’t need to mask the spindles before staining.

I’m considering either TWP or RAD semi transparent stain. One factor in the decision might be whether one is better than the other for ease of dealing with the spindles. What is your opinion on this?

I plan on stripping and whitening before staining.

Steve

p.s. Great forum with lots of helpful information.
