Hi:

I live in greater Toronto area. We have replaced old deck with new one using pressure treated pine slats on top of a canopy of our car garage. The canopy is concrete and our deck is constructed on 4x2" slats. Due to uneven surface, there water stagnation below the slats and some areas of the deck remain moist when it rains. The water does not touch the bottom of the slats as they are elevated 2" from the concrete slab. The deck is now six months old and has a fresh colour (we had opted for a light brown colour as against traditional greenish grey coloured slats. The deck is partially exposed to sunlight but in winter we have 3-12" snow on top of slats for much of Dec-March period, as the snow can not be removed. What is the best option for the deck stain?

Do you already have a stain on the wood?

No. The new deck was installed in September of 2014 and has not been stained till now.

Armstrong Clark stain for this in Ontario. Make sure you clean and brighten for the prep.

This appears to be an oil based stain. Isn't this prone to mildew, algae and mold, with my situation of some water/moisture which may be present under the deck which is raised just 2" above the concrete canopy on top my garage? I would think that stagnant water will be an issue at least 4-6 months of the year. The partial coverage of the sun on deck is also an issue. Please advise

I would also request suggestion on prep work. Would just cleaning suffice with a cleaner as deck is just six months old?

You would need to prep with both the Deck Cleaner and Wood Brightener for this. This removes the mill glaze. Oil based stains are not all prone to mold or mildew, just the ones that do not contain mildewcides. Doubt you will have an issue but if you want to go water based, then use Defy Extreme.
