Hello all-

Can I ask a gate question?  I'm finishing a western red cedar gate and it's time to pick a stain.  I cannot decide between oil and water-based.

Here is what I want:  I want the cedar to be a dark, orange-cedar color, but I want to grain to show. I'm thinking semi-transparent.  I want it to have a bit of a sheen...not like mahogany boat but a subtle sheen.  I want it to look good and last.

HELP...oil or water?  I've looked at TWP 100 (oil)/SW Woodscapes Ext Poly (water)/Pittsburgh satin Paramount semi-transparent (oil)

Deck and exterior wood stains do not have sheens. That means it peel. Try Light Walnut by Restore A Deck wood stain or Armstrong Clark in Chestnut.

Thanks Deck Stain Help!

I've seen gates, not decks, have a bit of a sheen.

Pittsburgh Satin Paramount seems to have a bit of a sheen.  I've attached a picture of what I'm looking for.  Maybe it's not quite a sheen.  I just don't want it dull, like my cedar fence.

It seems an oil base would be a bit more shiny than an water-based.  My fence is water and is pretty dull.  What do you think?  What is the difference in look between oil and water-based?

Thanks for everything, it's really important to me to get this done right.

Do not use a sheen. It will peel. Best to use one of these brands:  https://www.deckstainhelp.com/the-5-best-deck-stain-reviews-and-ratings/

The base of the stain has nothing to do with a sheen level.
