I have an Australian Hardwood (Queensland Spotted Gum) with a Janka Hardness rating of 11. After installation they used Cabots Oil Based Stain Natural. The deck is about 9 months old and showing signs of fade especially in the areas exposed to the sun.
Question 1) can I change from oil to water based stain as I am considering Defy Extreme Stain?
2) I am a newbie in this and would like to get recommendations on products for preparing the deck for restraining?
1. Yes as long as you uses a deck stripper and wood brightener for the prep.
2. Restore A Deck products.
1. You can't apply a water based stain over an oil based stain because the oil will repel the water. The problem with removing an oil based stain is that it most likely has penetrated deep within the wood and removing it could damage the wood. You should call the manufacturer and ask a technician how to remove their product if at all possible.
Oil based products are known to perform better than water based. One major difference being penetration depth and sealer life. If you did not have a good experience with one oil based product, consider purchasing a professional sealer as apposed to a residential sealer.
