Found your site via google search and could use your expertise. Installed semitransparent oil stain to VGF boards reclaimed from gymnasium bleachers. Planed 1/16" off the underside of the boards as that side had less abuse. The good face was sanded with belt sander, 100 grit and results were great. I asssumed the boards were acclimatized as old as they were and applied the oil. For three days all was great and then after a shower the fourth day- random, black specks began to appear in the finish. Soap and water nor mild bleach solution have no affect. Test samples that were kept in garage did not have this issue. Used Cabot Timber Oil per instructions, temps were 80 day and >50 at night, in SE Idaho. What caused this and what and when to rectify please.

We would need pictures.

Also, you should have treated this as new wood and you over sanded too smooth: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/how-long-should-you-wait-to-stain-a-new-deck/

This is one of the boards with the specks/spots visible.

Thanks for your help.

It is either mildew to rust. Either way you would need to strip and start over to fix.

As winter weather is approaching, should I leave it on for the winter and remove and start over in the spring? Anything wrong with this intention?
