Hello,

I live in Comox BC and will be installing a new deck this month. It has been a hard decision between Pressure Treated or Cedar. I had made the decision for PT as cedar is twice the price, but then I put stain on both and the Cedar looks much nicer. What wood would you recommend for our area? There are also so many different opinions regarding when to stain!!  I was told by staff at the local lumber stores that you have to wait 6 months for PT and you can stain Cedar right away but then I saw on your forum that even with Cedar you should wait 2-3 months?  I have also been doing tons of research on stain (so confusing) and have decided that Restore A Deck seems like the best choice for our climate. I also was considering Armstrong Clark. What do you recommend for where I live and can you buy either stains in Canada? Also if the Cedar is new, do I still have to sand prior to staining? I see there is also talk about using a cleaner and brightener?

Thanks in advance for all your help:) Your site has been a wealth of information....lol maybe a bit too much as now I am confused haha.

Thank you,

Shelley

We like cedar better. You cannot stain cedar wood right away, they are wrong:

AC stain or TWP 200 Series. Do not sand for prep. Clean and brighten.

Thanks Scott. I appreciate the feedback. Also nails is screws? I will check out the stains. Hopefully I can get them where I live.

Does not matter if screws or nails.
