    1. State you live in:  Pennsylvania

  • 2. Full Shade, Partial Shade, or Full Sun: we have all 3 since it’s a covered porch
  • 3. Type of Wood:  some sort of cedar
  • 4. Mold or Mildew Issues:  some mold.  Used 30 Second Cleaner to clean the cedar posts.
  • 5. Main Issues with Previous Stains:  our cedar posts and arch get a lot of sun, but some of the posts do not.  We had major gouges due to pressure washing damage so had sand some of the arch way and lost.  We previously stained just the posts with SW Superior Deck Exterior Oil Based Transparent.

We have read so much on your website, but need to confirm a few things.  We have cedar posts, a cedar ceiling and a cedar arch way on a covered porch.  We stained the all posts and the outside of the archway facing the sun.  Everything else was left untreated (ceiling and inside of archway because it gets no sun).  The SW transparent decking Oil based stain did not protect the posts/archway that faced the sun.  The posts that did not see the sun still look good.  We had to sand the archway due to pressure washing damage.  We are currently using 30 seconds to clean the cedar because of dirt and some mildew. Do we strip the SW stain that posts look ok on in order for everything to start fresh?  We are not sure what to do?  Please help!

Yes, strip it down and then brighten all wood when done.

@administrator What do you recommend to strip and brighten for cedar?  Also, what stain do you recommend for cedar.  We get a lot of sun on the cedar posts and archway.  I’d like to keep the color of the wood as natural as possible.   I would like to purchase what you recommend.  Thank you!

I’ve attached more pictures.  The only area really left with stain on it is the post showing the word “porch” on it.  The archway we sanded down and the other stain faded off the posts.

Use the Restore A Deck Stripper on the one post. When done, use the Restore A Deck Brightener on all wood. Stain with the Restore A Deck Stain in a semi-transparent color.
