I have used an oxalic acid solution and a pressure washer to prep before stain. On the seldom walked portion of our deck that was fine and the stain looks great. Now working on the part we walk on every day to get in/out of the house. Also the part where the dogs water bow and bed were. There are stains on the untreated wood. I have tested some chemical paint stripper on spots. It gets up the obvious paint and lightens a few spots, but most stains remain. Any suggestion on products to try? Sanding seems to lighten some, but there is no way to prevent more stains if I sand and then have to wait 2 mos before staining...
Not sure what the stains are, but they are deep into the wood so nothing that is a surface cleaner would work. Not sure what would work if anything will. Sorry.
FYI, oxalic acid does not prep wood for stain. It is an acid or part of what is found in a wood brightener but should never be used as the only option to prep wood but is used as a neutralizer after using a cleaner or stripper. By itself, it really does nothing for prep.
