If you spray you may get drips and runs. Back brushing the wet stain will ensure the stain is applied evenly and correctly.

I am sorry but we have never used or seen a Sears brand stain. It may be time to strip off the old stain and start over with a different brand.

How to maintain stain a year later? Still looks good.

I would just lightly clean to remove dirt and leave it alone. Do not add more stain. You cannot put a clear sealer on top of a stain.
