I recently stained my deck with Sikkens SRF in Mahogany. I had pressure washed deck, cleaned with a brightened and then sanded. Now my deck is blotchy, seems stain did not react well with the little bit of previous stain and worse part is that the stain has turned black in parts! Not only that but it rained for all of three minutes and ruined the stain. The wood was stripped bare and had no blackening. What has happened? I am so confused! I don’t know what to do and if stripping it will even allow me to put a transparent stain back on. It is soooo dark. Will stripping a freshly stained deck work?

Strip off what you can and then sand the rest off. Brighten last. Not easy to remove a new coat of stain but the only way to fix this.

Thank you. Will try a stripper today. Do you happen to know why the colour was inconsistent and so dark almost black in places? Want to make sure this doesn’t happen with the next coat of stain. The darkest parts of the wood had no old stain on it.

You did not prep correctly. All previous acting needed to be fully removed.
