Hey all,
1st deck refinishing happening after more than 5 years (not sure how much longer than that, as I bought 5 yrs ago and haven't done anything to it since). Guess I'll start with the admin requested info first:
California location (near Tahoe)
Partial shade
Pretty sure this is a fir/pine
No mold
OG deck paint was 90% gone from stairs and 50% off wrap around portion
I know Thompsons isn't the best choice by far, but it's what was in the budget. Went with the Nutmeg semi stain and sealant. Sanded off all the paint and roughed up all wood but some weathered/grey remained. Knew that this would result in uneven coloration, but didnt care too much. Everything was porous and will accept stain. The color on the can, as you can guess, is a medium brown. When I started applying, the stain had a definite red color to it, you could not even tell that it was supposed to be brownish at All. About 30 minutes in, and no sign of browning. Could this have been a mislabeled can? Should I open another up to compare a tester? Anyone hear of this from Thompsons coloring? Did I apply too thick? Is this too many questions at once?
I doubt it was labeled wrong but more or less is the correct color. Colors will always vary based on wood type, age, and prep. Throw in that the Thompsons semi-trans stain applies more like paint, you will never get what you expect with the final color.
Thanks for the quick reply. I did expect a lot of variance due to the random states of the boards, especially since I ended up re-sawing a couple. However they all turned out pretty much the same red hue, even 5 hours later. I've attached a pic that really doesn't do justice to the difference in color, and how it's not even close to being brown. Should have shown the side by side of the previous brown on the deck boards adjacent. Will do tomorrow.
