I will be installing 12x12" rough sawn doug fir porch columns that a local sawmill is cutting for me. My question is when should I stain them?
With a deck, I know you usually want to wait for the factory sheen to wear off and the cells to open up before staining. That won't be an issue here, since it's rough sawn. However, it may still be a little green. Not sure what the moisture content will be when I get them, but they're cutting them from logs in the pile out back and won't be kiln dried.
If I stain now, am I asking for trouble? On the other hand, if I let them sit (installed outside / exposed to the elements) until next summer, will I get excessive warping and checking?
FWIW, I'm in a northern climate with cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
You can stain rough sawn right away as long as the wood is dry. Below 15%.
Thanks @administrator.
And if the wood isn't dry? I imagine it'll take quite a while for it to get down to 15%, seeing as how they are 12" x 12". But also can't wait for a year to install them -- stain or no stain, they're going to be out there over the winter. 😉
