Hi,
My deck has solid stain and no gap for water to drain. I was planning on ripping between the boards for drainage and then stripping (Restore A Deck) and re-staining (solid same color) my deck this year. Unfortunately I have run out of time. Is it ok to use something like Thompson's water seal to get me through the winter. I am concerned it may make things more difficult when I clean and re-stain next year.
Thx!
You cannot apply a sealer over top of a deck stain, especially a solid color stain.
I'm glad I asked. Thanks for the reply. Can you help me understand why?
Sealers are penetrating coatings that need to soak into the wood grain to achieve any proper results. If there is a previous coating on the wood, the sealer cannot soak in so it will not work or even dry properly.
