I live in Toronto. My deck and a fence constructed from PT boards 4 years ago have 4 - 5 hrs of sun per day. 3 years ago I used Behr clear transparent water based stain. After 3 years fence is still looking ok and a deck peeled. I pressured cleaned the deck and sanded it and will use the same stain again. I also wanted to refresh the fence.
I used a very low pressure just to clean the dust and dirt from the fence. Can I stain the fence over the old stain?

Also after sanding the deck I cleaned the dust from the deck with low pressure. How much time should I allow for a deck to dry?

Thanks,
SP

You can only stain over the current stain if you use the same brand and color otherwise you will need to strip and brighten for prep. As for the deck, typically 48 hours after prep before staining.

Thanks. Deck finished. Looks good and I hope it will not peel next year.

One more question regarding the left over stain. I have 3/4 of the can left. How long can I keep it in order to use it again? Any particular way of keeping (temperature,...)?

The shelf life of opened containers is usually about 12 months or less. It will probably not last any longer.
