I recently went the through the headache of preparing my deck for stain/seal with the subject coating (home depot custom color added to match previous stain). I found a break in the weather and went for it.

The prduct was nearly the consitancy of gel, and did not seem to penetrate well on the 1st application. As I am a novice, my 1st application was very uneven, and overlaps were obviously darker, etc. I debated about whether to apply second coat again right away (as there were no directions regarding application of second coat)- within a few hours of 1st coat - but waited for 16-hours. I thinned the second coating with acetone to try and get better penetration (noted acetone identified in the preparation directions o product so thought was safe to use as thinner). Did second coat and unfortunately have a nearly opaque coating, but does not appear to be beading? Wondering if the acetone negated/broke down the sealer components?

Looking for feedback, criticism, direction.

Thanks in advance

I am a little confused. Did you take Sikkens to Home Depot to add color or pigment to it? If so that was your mistake. SRD is a premixed stain and you cannot add paint pigment to it. It will ruin the product.

No. They sell Sikkins stain at Home Depot. I mentioned that I wish the stain was a slightly different color, and the paint dept guy said they could make a custom color for me if I wanted.

I really think he made the mistake by adding pigment into the Sikkens. It is a premixed stain.

Bad idea to have pigment added to Sikkens deck stain. It sounds like you stained directly over your previous stain, which is also a bad idea with this kind of coating. You may have thinned the product too much, but either way, you will end up with adhesion problems in the near future.
