In May I built a deck/patio out of pressure treated wood. My neighbors huge cherry tree covers half of it. In June the cherries fell all over it and the rotted with some leaves. My brand new deck now has black stains covering large areas.

What can I use to clean off the rotting fruit stains?

What can I put on my new deck to protect it from the cherries next year?

It is only a 4-12 inches off the ground so I'm also concerned about mold growth.

And my young kids play on it so it needs to be safe for them.

Any recommendations?

A deck cleaner and wood brightener should help to remove the stains as long as they are not too deep into the wood. Nothing will stop the stains though in the future.
