3 years ago the contractor erred and put two coats of oil based on a cedar deck after stripping. The result was a sticky deck. He stripped it and sanded the deck (400 sq feet).

Following this we applied a water based nano tech product ( $75 per gallon). Over the two winters it grayed. We had the deck professionally power washed yesterday. To my surprise the weathered deck looks brand new with soft cedar grain and oodles of perfectly clean boards. It dried and a little softer in tone.

3/4 of the deck is under a roof. I am tempted just to leave it alone this year and to re apply the clear sealer just to the part facing the bay exposed to direct rain and sun.

Would like to know your thoughts. Thank you.

Clear sealers will gray naturally in months as the provide no UV protection at all. It is not suggested.

yes I have seen that the beauty of the wood is quite something. The deck is mostly covered. I put a new coat of DEFY clear sealer on parts that are exposed to the elements. The result was very good, a clear matte over wood right out of the lumbar yard. I don't know if I could bring myself to use stain.

@whidbey

did the contractor use defy the first time?  I'm thinking using their clear stain.
