Contractor installed a new, rough sawn yellow cedar fence. Wood was dried and then stained with SharkSkin translucent in Teak.
I do not think any washing or anything was done to the new wood.
After some rain I now see blackish marks running down the fence. Seems worst below a horizontal rail.
The product instructions say "Extractive Bleeding: New wood containing high levels of tannins should be prepared using SharkSkin® Deck Brightener to limit discoloration or tannin bleed."

Did the contractor fail to properly prepare the wood before staining? How do I deal with these black marks?

It does look like tannin bleed but it is not the contactors fault nor can you prevent this from occurring. Brightener will help to remove it but it does not stop it from coming or preventing it in the future. At this point to fix, you would most likely need to strip and brighten again. Unfortunately, it may return again.

Thanks for the reply. I also contacted the mill that produced the wood and they recommended no staining should be done to yellow cedar. Is that correct? Should nothing be done with yellow cedar?
Here is a picture of the stain job as originally done by the contractors so you can see why I'm thinking they are not too smart about wood treatment. Their fix was to spot stain the marks a couple months later. Probably should have been stripped and restained after that tiger stripe job?
