I have a 19 year-old redwood deck in Denver metro (6,000') with half day full sun so get plenty of UV. I have been using Penofin Blue (Redwood color) semi-transparant stain. It has been too many years (more than 6) since I re-stained the deck. I am planning on sanding the vertical surfaces and cleaning and using a wood brightener on the deck since the horizontal surfaces (spindles) are very dark (maybe due to stain build-up?). Is this the correct prep?
I have also been considering using a different product (Messmaers, Cabot or Sikkens) but after reading the forum I am not so sure. My major complaint with the Penofin is the smell as I need to wear a ventilator mask due to the fumes.
Thanks,
For the prep you need to strip and brighten. Penofin has a tendency to darken. i would switch. TWP is better than the stains you mentioned.
