I last finished deck in Sept 2019 and it held up well, bit is overdue now.
I just cleaned it and it looks dry and streaked. I’d like to try a water based product. I read the label but can’t tell if the PPG was water or oil based. I live in Mansfield OH , between Columbus and Cleveland. Any
guidance is appreciated.
Strip and brighten for prep using this:

Stain with a water-based stain like the Restore A Deck or Defy Extreme.
Thanks, I just ordered stripper, brightener, and light walnut stain!
Follow-up to come!
I have a 1200 sq ft deck. The decking is 2 weeks old, with railing being installed now. The wood is new, #1 pine, kiln dried, then pressure treated, then kiln dried again. Sanded on all sides. Hidden clips were used instead of screws or nails. It is not covered. I live in northwest NC. The deck receives direct sunlight from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM almost all year. The wood is beautiful and I want to apply a light-brown, semi-transparent stain to tone down the yellow, but retain much of the grain. I have been studying many stain topics and reviews, and I am unable to piece them together to make an intelligent decision. Would you please help me select an appropriate stain/sealer for this application? The main reasons you make your recommendation would be appreciated.
You cannot stain it yet. See this about new wood:

After proper wait and prep, look at Armstrong Clark Wood stains.
I used Restore-a-Deck products for tripping, brightener and applied restore a deck stain in light walnut.
I’m very happy with results. I could have done a better job with stripper in some corners. I bought the kit with stripper and brighter but it didn’t have the gel/emulsifier and this might help if you’ve got a lot of spindles and deeper corners so the product stays in place to do it’s job.
It took me much longer than the YouTube video I watched. But I’m not a professional, and I’m probably much slower. The deck is 8’ x 12’ with 73 spindles, 7 steps, and 3 walls. Some of it requires a ladder.
One mistake I made was not covering an aluminum siding area adequately, and when the wind shifted, it sprayed the stripper on a corner of the house. Needless to say, we will have to deal with some repainting the siding where the paint was stripped… my fault, not the product!
I just got down my first coat of Cabot Gold today (Sunday) and the weather has shifted for Tuesday night-Thursday to drop below freezing. It’s supposed to warm up to the 60s on Friday. Should I wait to apply the second coat until Friday or try and apply it tomorrow? The deck has full sun and it’s dry outside (we’re at altitude)…Monday is slated to be in the 70s. Cabot says you can wait 7 days between coats. Thanks in advance!
We would do it Monday.
Hi there,
State: NY
Partial Shade.
Douglas Fir
Slight Mould and Mildew
30 year old damaged deck that's never been maintained.
Sir,
I've got a Douglas fir outdoor Deck. Its about 6x40ft. 30 years old, never been maintained.
I've pressure washed it but unsure as to the next steps. Should I
A: Sand it and apply a stain or
B: Should I apply a stripper then sand it before applying a stain?
C: Something totally different?
Also:
- What stain is best? Water or Oil? Im looking for something that is minimal maintenance.
First time doing this so any tips welcome!
TIA.
Thanks. See attached.
