Hello! Will try to keep this short. Two year old pressure treated deck: Used Olympic Maximum Semi Transparent Cedartone (water based) last year on the horizontals and fascia. I left the verticals untouched b/c we liked the look of the natural wood and didn't want something too dark. Needed some pigment on the horizontals due to the amount of sunlight. I almost went with TWP 1500 but the Olympic was lighter and clean up easier. Plus, I can't get TWP locally.

It's now a year later and the verticals need something as the color discrepancy is becoming more noticeable (see pic). The Olympic has also begun to flake off on several deckboards so I will need to touch those areas up and put some thought into its replacement in the next 2-3 years. Unfortunately, I just read this particular stain is difficult to strip. 😡 Not looking forward to that day.

So, I need to choose a product this season for the verticles that I will also use for the rest of the deck, whenever that time comes. I basically want to be able to only have to power wash every year or two and reapply the same stain as needed (2-3 years) w/o stripping. Keeping the deck a light color isn't important anymore.

I would appreciate answers to these questions:

1. Should I stick with a water based for the verticals (same Olympic or maybe Defy Extreme Cedartone)? I'm assuming they'll match ok.

2. If I stay with one of these water based products, can I simply touch up every 2-3yrs without stripping?

3. If I go with oil based (probably TWP 1500 Cedartone) for the verticals this season, I know I will eventually have to strip the deck before applying it to the rest it. For the long term, when reapplying oil based every 2-3 years or as needed, will stripping be required? Or is power washing enough?

Thanks in advance!

You could go either way with this. The 1501 Cedartone will not match though but Defy Cedartone would be close.

Defy is the best penetrating water based stain that we have used. It still does not penetrate as well as an oil though.

The better it penetrates, the less chance of wearing unevenly. You typically have to strip when the stain wears unevenly.
