We are currently having a brand new deck/porch built and it is almost finished. I have a few questions on how and when to stain and with what.

Here are the basic stats, with more particulars listed below:

1. State you live in: Central Virginia

2. Full Shade, Partial Shade, or Full Sun: Morning Sun, Afternoon shade

3. Type of Wood: Pressure treated pine

4. Mold or Mildew Issues: n/a New, but that could be a problem with the humidity in our area.

5. Main Issues with Previous Stains: n/a New

The guy building the deck says we should wait a year before staining. It is a high traffic area since it is our front porch. We have a lot of red clay and we would like to protect it and have it stained to help hide the dirt. We don't mind waiting a few months, but a year seems a bit extreme. He also suggested Thompson's, but I see nothing positive about that brand.

We would prefer to use low VOC even though it is not required in my area. We will be using the deck a lot and we have small children and dogs.

Based on reading through another page on this site, it seems like the best options are TimberOil, Armstrong Clark, TWP 1500 and Defy Extreme Deck stain.

For optimal results, how much time should we realistically wait to stain? Which stain option would be the best given the type of deck, location, etc?

Thank you!

I would wait 1-2 months then lightly clean and brighten the deck. TimberOil Brand is the way to go for brand new wood. It will penetrate better. You can always switch to TWP or Defy Extreme later.

I have a deck built last July, never stained, cleaned with pressure washer (water only),pressure treated pine, located in North East Tx. What stain would you recommend?

You could try an oil based stain like TWP or a water based stain like Defy Extreme.

Have a new redwood deck in Southern CA (Los Angeles)
Sun is really strong and I have seen color fade in months.
What would you suggest for stain and protection

Thank you.

Have you tried the TWP 1500 for California? A darker color will take longer to fade then a lighter color.

Just had a new deck installed - pressure treated pine. It's large - 14' x 32', 15 steps and a landing - the rail balusters are Deckorators, but there is a wood top and bottom to them. The deck is on our ranch style home with a walk out basement. We are in Michigan, the exposure is full sun. Previous deck had some mold/mildew issues underneath, but never on the top side. Based on what your site says, I'll want to be sure to clean and brighten before staining, also to chose a semi-transparent stain. Please advise of the brand you'd recommend. Also, what do you think about the concept of trying to stain underneath? I dread the thought, but the drip marks are unsightly...we often use the patio below and discouraging myself from looking up proved to be problematic.

I would not do the underside unless it really bothers you as it can be difficult to apply. For the stain, you would want a deep penetrating stain that is able to penetrate the new wood. I would look at Armstrong Clark or Timber Oil Brand.

just installed new pressure cedar deck wood deck. Getting mixed advice on when to apply stain or seal. Seeing hairline cracks in some of the boards. Being told to apply sealant at once, but then read that if water beads up to wait...very confusing! Live in N. Texas. West exposure. gets lots of afternoon sun.

I would wait a month or two then clean and brighten the wood to prep.

A plastic pump sprayer will apply the cleaner and most semi-transparent stains. You will need to back wipe the spindles to make sure the stain is applied evenly.

I built a new deck a few months ago and plan to stain it in the coming weeks (I live in the Atlanta, GA area, deck is pressure-treated pine). I have seen various recommendations on this site concerning the best stain to use for a new deck. My question is: What really is the best stain to use for a new deck? TimberOil Brand? TWP? Armstrong?
