Thanks for your great website. I'm looking for recommendations for a 1-month old PT fence, 1-month old balusters, and a cedar gate in the DC Metro area. The winters here aren't especially harsh, but we can get some snow and ice, and summers tend to be humid.
The PT Fence and Cedar Gate I am planning to stain - I was originally planning Ready Seal Cedar, but after reading your page I am now inclined to go with TWP 1500 Cedar, would this be your recommendation?
For the balusters, I want to paint them white - Flood Solid?
Do I need to do any sort of prep if they're new? Do I need to wait longer than a month for it to weather? I was anxious to do it before the wintertime, but I'm unclear whether it's better to stain it before winter or wait until the spring.
Moisture meter reads are currently 12% on the PT lumber, 9% on the Cedar gate.
Deck is composite wood.
Thanks!
Yes you need to wait and prep first. You should do this in the Spring. Prep with a deck cleaner and wood brightener. Flood solid color decking stain for the vertical spindles white would be a good idea. TWP for the rest will give better UV protection and life. One positive on this is mostly all your wood is vertical so you will get 2-3 times longer life then a horizontal. Make sure to cover the composite when staining.
