Hi all!
So I'm in portland oregon, I built a new cedar deck last year...let it grey over the winter. 2 weeks ago I cleaned with Gemini restore-a-deck cleaner, most of the grey gone, just scattered patches of grey left where the wood texture is rougher.
I re-cleaned a few of those spots last night, scrubbed, washed and then applied the Gemini brightener. This morning I noticed that the overall color of the wood is lighter but there are some strange orange splotches scattered around, mostly in the areas that I re-cleaned last night (but not in all the areas that I re-cleaned).
I was planning to stain tomorrow with TWP-100 pecan, but now I'm worried that those splotches will show through.
Anybody experience something like that? Did I goof up somewhere?
Appreciate any help!
Looks like tannin bleed from the wood. Have you applied the brightener yet? It may show a little bit but there is not much you can do about it at this point anyhow. It comes from the wood itself.
Thanks!
Tannin bleed. Wow, didn' think about that.
It happened after I used the brightener but only in a couple of areas of the deck.
I was considering going over those areas again with the cleaner but that would delay the staining.
It's also possible that the second round of cleaning (as detailed in my first post) brought these stains out, and that if I try cleaning again it will get worse.
Not sure if it will get worse.
I solved the mystery...and let this be a cautionary tale to others!
When I applied the brightener, I left it there for 45 min or so before washing. During that time, little brown seed pods had floated down from my maple tree. The bleach in the brightening solution leached the tannins out of the seed pods and they were absorbed into the cedar.
I hadn't noticed that night because it was starting to get dark when I washed.
So is there any way of washing the tannin stains out?
Thanks!
Not really. Brightener will sometimes neutralize them out of the wood.
