I recently applied two coats of TWP 1500 to my exterior deck. The deck looks great, but about 200 square feet of my lawn adjacent to the deck is now dead. There could be other reasons, but the pattern of dead grass indicates that rain runoff from the deck carried with it chemicals that caused the grass to die. I have had lawn care professionals look at it, and they agree. The type of grass is centipede, which is commonly used in this area.

The damage has obviously been done, and cannot be undone, but I am particularly concerned about the future. The lawn care people suggest that the area be re-sodded, which is what I plan to do, however before I do this, I have several questions:

1. How long are the chemicals which caused this damage likely to remain in the soil? I live in coastal North Carolina where the soil is typically sandy and quite porous.

2. If I re-sod, will the new sod be affected? How long should I wait before re-sodding?

3. Are the chemicals likely to continue to wash off the deck surface when it rains, and if so, for how long?

4. Is there anything that I could apply to this section of lawn which might help neutralize the damaging chemicals.

If you get TWP on to grass it will burn it. Most likely this may have happened from overspray during application. The only way it would happen from runoff is if it heavily rained right after application.

1. Not sure but probably gone by now.
2. Doubt it. Sodding now is okay.
3. No.
4. No.
