Go with the grain of the wood and do the entire board length. Keep a wet edge and make sure there is no puddling. AC is fairly easy to apply.

AC is a one coat product. For older wood we would put 2 coats on wet on wet.

Not much you can do except strip it off and start over with a clean surface.
