Deck Stain Stripping Questions and Answers

We live on a lake, meaning our deck sits just a few feet from the water. Mold is an ongoing issue, but after 20 years of cleaning and restaining, it needs a bit more attention. Last year we power washed and stained, and the results are not good.
Reading some of the forums here, it appears we need to strip, brighten and then stain. Because we are so close to the water, we need to use products that are environmentally safe for the flora and fauna of the lake and the riparian (wetland) areas.
Please provide suggestions.
