I built a small deck in back of my house. Bought the wood three years ago and built it two years ago. I bought enough Yellow Cedar to do a small front porch too. Finally finished that and used RAD two part cleaner/brightener to prep both. Then used TWP stain on both. But it seems I used a bit too much of the stain maybe? It's four days later and both decks are sticky still. It's been nice warm and dry weather here (80's and sunny but cooling into the 60's overnight).
The front took several wet on wet coats just like the instructions said to do. And I back brushed it a bit later. The back I only did two coats but didn't back brush it as it had seemed to dry to a dull finish not shiny like the front.
I read on here somewhere to try using mineral spirits and stain pad to try removing some of the excess. Tried that yesterday and it may have helped a bit but both are still sticky in at least spots.
Is the only real option now to completely strip the stain and start over? What a pain. It looks nice though, honeytone was exactly the color shade I wanted to hit.
Also, how hard is brand new stain going to be to strip? Straight mineral spirits didn't seem to touch it much. Will it take several tries to get it back to clean enough to try staining over? I've never had this happen before.
Yes, you overapplied. It is supposed to be dull, not shiny. Stripping is really the only option to fix. It can be done but harder to remove newly applied stain, especially if over-applied.
