Over the weekend, I scraped/sanded the top surface of my deck railings, not the deck (flooring). I have (it's been a few yrs so I don't quite remember) Olympic solid stain on the whole deck including railings & spindles. It went on like paint as I recall. It's a 20 yr old deck but the wood is in pretty good shape. I wanted to do a quick once-over on the top surface of the railings, so did just the top of the railings. Then tried to learn more and ran into this site, quite helpful info.

The railings still had some of the old stain and mostly exposed wood, so I didn't want to do stain again (not the cheap stuff from HD/Lowes), after all, it lasts a few yrs at most. I figured I'll prime w/ oil-based primer. Now I don't know what to put on top. Some say latex stain is fine, my thought was to use oil-based stain. After reading some of the product reviews and some posts, I probably shouldn't have done the primer. It's too late, primer already on. Any suggestions?

I live at 7000ft in Colorado but the deck is on the north side, so the sun doesn't hit all that much. The deck flooring is for another weekend, I'll probably rent a floor sander, and put down a good stain.

If you use a primer you will need to apply a solid color stain over it. Should not matter if latex or oil as long as it is compatible with the primer you used.

Ok thanks, yes I plan to use a solid color stain which I think is what I used previously. I just want to give it a better chance against the elements. Can colored stains be purchased in quart sizes?
