Hi! My husband and I live in Maryland and have a deck on the north side of our house- mostly in shade. It probably dates to 1996 when the house was built and is solid structurally but westhered. It has a green solid or semi-solid stain on it now that is very worn, discolored, and mildew in places though is not peeling.

We are hiring someone to clean and restain it for us. I need to ask what kind of cleaner they use, but he told us we definitely need a solid color stain.

We love color and really want a purple deck! We like the “purple velvet” color that Olympic has in their Maximum and Wood Protector products. It doesn’t come in Elite.

Benjamin Moore claims their deck solid stains come in thousands of colors, but their transparent stains floor bad reviews on here.

Any advice? We’d prefer an oil-based since it lasts longer and we aren’t doing it ourselves, but I can’t seem to find any solid stains that are oil based.

Use Flood Solid Stains. They can mix it to any color you want.

Thank you! Online, it looks like the flood solid colors are the exact same as the Olympic colors, and it says they come in “over 120 colors, with no mention of retailer tinting.

Would I just find a retailer who carries it in white and then ask them to open it and tint it to whatever paint swatch I like? Sorry for the naive questions - first time homeowners, and have never done this before!

Both Home Depot and lowe’s seem to only carry it in clear and Cedar, so I’m having trouble finding it in a white or turntable base. I can try Ace and True Value as well, but if you know of a national retailer that reliably carries it, I’d love to know!

Another question: the guys who are power washing and restraining our deck are not going to use a stripper, just a cleaner I think. I need to ask about sanding. With doing a darker color solid stain, is a brightener necessary? Does it matter which cleaner they use? Anything else we should ask them? Attached is the deck as is. It’s a greenish blue solid or semi-solid stain. No peeling, but lots of mildew.

All solid color deck stains can be tinted to any color you want. The Olympic and Flood are not the same product.

Using a cleaner is fine as you do not need to remove all. Solid color stains will cover the current stain that is on the wood.
