Thompson's is useless in our opinion. Look at TWP 1500 or Armstrong Clark for this.

I am looking for as Sealer for my Cedar Pergola. Can someone please suggest 2 good options.

1 - New York
2 - Full Sun
3 - Cedar
4 & 5 - No Issues

I would use a clear or light colored Sealer.

Thanks!

Steven, look at Armstrong Clark in the Amber or the Defy Extreme Natural Pine.

Hi,

Is that the same as a "seal"?

THanks for your help.

Stains are sealers as well.

Hello, I'm new to the forums, from what i've read so far, this page looks like an excellent resource. I'm hoping i can get some advice on the best method to pursue for my raised balcony.

We've got a west facing cedar balcony on our house, it was installed almost two years ago (fall 2011), we've done nothing yet to protect the wood and it's going grey. While we don't mind the grey look, we are about to put a T+G soffit on the underside and are aware that the two will finish differently over time, but are hoping to find a method of cleaning and protecting the cedar so that the whole piece looks relatively similar in colour. Ideally, we would clean/brighten away the grey and then have a clear coat with some UV protection to give us a natural look of cedar without a surface film if possible. Any suggestions?

I've heard good things about Seasonite, but i can't find it in Canada as of yet and also don't see it in your reviews anywhere. anyone have any experience with Seasonite?

1. Toronto, Ontario Canada
2. Full Sun - west and south west exposure
3. Cedar
4. Greying of wood, some splotches from water on underside of horizontal boards, and a few green spots where there is less solar exposure but otherwise minimal damage.
5. No previous finishes whatsover

Thanks in advance!

Seasonite is not going to work for you.

Try Armstrong Clark stain in the Amber color after a good cleaning and brightening for the prep.

So After I got done staining my deck with twp 1500 it rained all night. Now it is sort of separating from the boards. Almost like an excess dry stain on top. The deck is also blotchy. How can I fix it at this point? I may have also added too much stain while doing it. Please help me save it for the season! It is a pressure treated deck.

The only thing you can do is remove and start over. You cannot add more to fix.

Trying to decide how to finish my new screen porch floor
Massachusetts
Partial to full shade
floor was installed 3 months ago.

Flooring is tongue and groove perennial (brand) wood. This is a pine product stabilized with acetylation. I bought all the color samples of the TWP 1500 products. Testing them with the stain resulting in all of them looking blotchy. Not sure if this is due to sanding marks, uneven pore uptake of the pigment, or what. I came across a indoor floor site that says staining floors is a nightmare.

Not sure what I should do as the floor is not out in the elements but is also not an indoor floor. I'm leaning to the lightest color stain just to reduce the visibility of the uneven stain uptake.
suggestions?

I would use a light color like the Honeytone for this.

Looking for best semi-transparent stain option for new cedar fence.
Northern Illinois
Full Sun
Cedar
I am replacing an old fence with a new one and am building it one section at a time. For that reason (and to avoid shipping charges) I do not want to order online (I know the best stains are offered online but price and convience rule out this option). Therefore, I am debating between the following brands:
Flood
Cabot
Wolman
Weatherscreen
Ultra
NWP
Thompson's WaterSeal
I am buying the pickets today and won't be installing them for a couple of weeks. My thought is to let them sit inside for a couple of weeks and then staining them before installation. Right now I am leaning toward Flood stain but am not set on this. Thanks in advance.

Of this mentioned I would look at Cabot or Flood in their oil based versions only.

Very informative site. Very helpful.
I live in Michigan and have a deck of pressure treated pine with a combination of sun and shade - about 50-50. The original deck is about 20 years old and has had various stains and finishes applied over the years. Most recent was Maximum Waterproofing sealant - penetrating oil in Canyon Brown about 4 years ago. Some color left, but pretty faded. There are also a few traces of a previous water based semi-transparent stain. I have been sanding out these areas.
The deck has been expanded from about 400 sq ft to 500 sq ft using new pressure treated pine. Both the old and new decking is 2x6. The added decking has only been in place for two weeks so it has not had much time to dry. I have not used a cleaner on either the old or new decking yet. I want to have the two surfaces look reasonably similiar, but I realize that may take time. What products would you recommend and what should the timing be to apply? If it makes better sense to apply different products to the different surfaces, that would be ok. I would continue with a medium-dark brown color. Thanks for your help.

When asking questions on Deck Staining please include:

I live in Portland, OR
My decks are in full sun
Jarrah wood
Oregon moisture always produces a fair amount of mold, mildew and moss.
last about a year is all

I am ready to apply Penofin Exotic oil finish (clear) to the deck based on a recommendation (first time for this product). I have stripped, cleaned and brightened the wood also using the Penofin 3 step process after first pressure washing the deck.

We have had great weather the last two weeks and so the decks were very dry prior to doing the cleaning steps. My question is how long do I need to wait for the wood to dry prior to applying the oil finish subsequent to the cleaning process? They look very dry and while I don't want to rush it and make a mistake, i am also very anxious to get them done so I can get on with the summer. 🙂

Thanks for your help,

Jeff
