Hi All,

here it goes:

a)10 year old 800 sq. ft.cedar deck, in Northeast PA.
b)Last coat 3 years ago Sikkens SRD
c)Last 2 years acquired 2 Shepherds & seems they are very good in "sanding" my deck. Deck was peeling(yes it was prepped properly(3rd time in life of deck) and the dogs just finished it off this summer.

My conundrum:

Power wash, lightly sand/clean and re stain(TWP 1501 or Sikkens SRD)only to have the "sander team" start again(my thought),...or power wash and leave it alone..to weather and then finally replace with something that requires no stain, such as Composite decking(wife's thought).

Any input would be appreciated....running out of bucks.

Thank you

Scott

Scott, most likely your dogs will wear off any stain that is applied. In general the better it penetrates the less chance of this happening. I would try the Armstrong Clark stain as it does penetrate better. If that does not work, replace in a couple of year with a composite. Be careful though that you do not pick a composite that scratches!

HI Scott, I agree with Administrator about the dogs being rough on stained decks. Admin's second sentence however is key. PENETRATION. A light sand will do little to aid penetration. My guess is that the millglaze was never removed from the deckboards. A translucent stain should NEVER peel. If it penetrates (impossible with millglazed wood) there is no film on top of the wood to peel. I would also insist that the SIKKENS dealer provide you with the original oil-based SRD product. The oil SRD achieves penetration in instances where the newer waterborne SRD doesn't. Good luck!
