Hi there,

  • 1. State you live in : New York , Long Island.
  • 2. Full Shade, Partial Shade, or Full Sun: pergola on deck -full sun only on some areas
  • 3. Type of Wood-not sure
  • 4. Mold or Mildew Issues- no
  • 5. Main Issues with Previous Stains -last one peeled after a year in the sunny spots . We layered on the stain very thick though. Our bad.
  • this year we tackled stripping, cleaning, sanding the deck. We added one coat of semi transparent stain. It’s the perfect color, I do not want it any thicker or more opaque.
  • question -can I , should I add a layer of clear transparent over the semitransparent for the extra wood protection? I do not want to add second coat of the semi-transparent.
  • behr water based products.
  • thank you for any advice. I googled a lot and couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for.

No, you cannot add a clear coat over a deck stain. It will peel if you do this. Behr, BTW is a very poor stain. It will peel most likely. Terrible reviews by us and consumers:
