I'm installing a tongue and groove porch floor with kiln dried pine in Cleveland Ohio.
I'm concerned with how quickly this wood is reported to rot and I'm looking for the best stain option. I'm currently looking at TWP 1500
I will be staining on all sides of the wood in an effort to prevent rot. I don't believe that the "only stain the top" is a viable solution for T&G.
You cannot prestain new wood nor do you need to stain all sides. Best to install, weather the wood, prep, and just stain the exposed wood.
What is protecting the wood when water gets into the tongue and groove? What's protecting the wood that's sitting on beams and joists and wicking up water?
Every other resource I've read states that all sides need to be primed or stained. Why is your opinion different?
Sealing all sides may cause wood rot and our opinion is the same opinion as 99% of all stain manufacturers on this. The wood needs to breathe and not be 100% encapsulated.
My porch columns sit on top of the floor boards. Should I not be worried about water soaking into the untreated wood there? I understand letting the boards breath but if they're in areas where water may stagnate that does not make sense to me.
It will not be needed there as well.
